1 January - New Year's Day. 3 March - Liberation from Ottoman yoke; signing of the San Stefano Peace Treaty in 1878 which secured the liberation of Bulgaria from the Turks. The Easter - April - May, defined by the East Orthodox calendar. 1 May - Labour Day. 6 May - St. George's Day, also Day of the Bulgarian Army. 24 May - Day of the Bulgarian culture and the Slavonic script. 6 September - Union Day; day of unification in 1885 between independent Bulgarian Principality and Eastern Roumelia which had remained Ottoman governed by the powers of Berlin Treaty. 22 September - Independence day. 1 November - Day of Enlightenment. 24, 25 December - Christmas holidays. 31 December - New Year's Eve.
Yes-No: One unique feature is that Bulgarians most often nod for "no" and shake head for "yes".
Signs: There are signs in English, German or French all over Bulgaria, but the majority are written in Cyrillic, which can be very disorientating to anyone not familiar with the alphabet. With some exceptions there are no difficulties communicating with the locals. |
