Bachkovo Monastery ranks second after Rila Monastery both in regards to size and architectural, artistic and literary significance. It was originally founded in 11 century. Enlarged in 14 century it became a Bulgarian religious and cultural center. The original architecture, the famous murals of its churches and buildings, the old icons and manuscripts turned the monastery into the wealthiest gallery of old Bulgarian art.
