Balkan Mountains
The Balkan Mountains are the longest mountain range in Bulgaria. They stretch from the western border of the country to the very sea edge to the east and divide it into two roughly equal parts – Northern and Southern Bulgaria. These mountains have always been closely connected to the history of Bulgaria. The first Bulgarian capitals were situated in the slopes of the Balkans. Many mountain villages in the area have been preserved almost intact for the last few centuries and today their architecture demonstrates the traditions of the Bulgarian Renaissance. |
