Madara Horseman
The archaeological site Madara occupies a rocky plateau. Remains of Thracian, Roman, Byzantine mediaeval Bulgarian and Turkish civilizations have been found but the most interesting site is the rock relief of Madara Horseman. It is carved on the plateau wall at a height of 23 meters and shows a hunting scene. Scholars interpret differently the origin of the relief but one is for sure – it dates back from early 8 century. Monumental in design and execution, the Madara Horseman is a magnificent message from the early Middle Ages. A 5 century fortress tops the high rocks above two caves once inhabited by the Neolithic Man. |
