Rila Monastery
Rila Monastery is hidden among the slopes of Rila Mountains, situated at an altitude of 1150 m above sea level. Originally it was built in 10 century and rebuilt on its present site in 14 century. Behind the 20-meter high fortress-like walls lie impressive buildings decorated with characteristic black-and-white checkered pattern, the principal church and a few chapels with valuable murals. Rila Monastery is the largest in the country and the most important symbol of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. There are several museum exhibitions, a rich library of Old Bulgarian literature, woodcarved crosses and icons, more than 1200 murals to be admired. |
