Shipka Pass
Situated in the central part of the Balkan Mountains Shipka Pass has always played important strategic role. In 1877 Shipka Pass was the scene of the most important battle in the Liberation War against the Turks - the outcome of the war depended on keeping control of the pass regardless of the casualties. Soldiers and ordinary people from the neighbouring villages fought together in a heroic battle.
A memorial church has been erected after the Liberation to commemorate the battle and to honour the casualties. The imposing gilded domes of the church are seen from far away, but most impressive is the beautifully decorated interior – icons, murals and 34 marble slabs with the names of the fallen soldiers and volunteers. |
