Strandzha Mountains

The interior of the southern coast of Bulgaria is dominated b y the wooded Strandzha Mountains, a region of plateaus and hilly land interrupted by the valleys of a few rivers – Ropotamo, Veleka, Resovska. The mountains are an extensive range – 270 km in length and 90 km in width. The esturaries of the rivers flowing into the Black Sea and the wooded mountain spurs create a magnificent scenery. The area has been populated since remote times and many traces have been left by the Thracians. The region is also popular for the folklore and traditions preserved and still practiced. This is the site of the annual festival of fire-dancing.
