Fire-Dancing Festival
Each year in spring a Fire-Dancing Festival is held in the small village
of Bulgari, beautifully situated among the slopes of Strandzha Mountains in
the South-Western part of Bulgaria. Traditionally associated with the feast
day of St. St. Constantine and Helena on May 21, the ritual involves initiates
falling into trance and dancing on a carpet of red embers, to furious bagpipe
accompaniment. Ethnologists have suggested that fire dancing is directly descended
from the Dionysian rites of the ancients, and thus constitutes a direct link
with the ecstatic religion of the Thracians.
Unfortunately, genuine “nestinarstvo” or fire-dancing no longer forms part
of village life and this is why witnessing such a ritual is a once-in-a-life
chance. Especially if combined with the specific atmosphere of a village with
century-old houses and the chance of tasting home-made specialities. |
