Sozopol – the ancient town of Apollo – is situated in the southern part of the Bulgarian seacoast, 35 km to the south of Bourgas, the region’s largest town. The history of the town goes back to the second millennium BC. The local museum has rich display of Thracian, Greek and Roman artefacts. The Old Quarter of Sozopol features winding cobbled streets lined by wooden houses dating back from 18-19 centuries and representing the traditional Renaissance architecture. The town offers the relaxing atmosphere of a quiet fishing town, which has made it the favoured holiday place. It is much loved by artists and painters. Annually the arts festival Apollonia, named after Apollo, the god of music and poetry and town’s patron also - is held here. Accommodation in private houses and hotels is offered both in the Old Quarter and the modern part of Sozopol.
The Black Sea is one of the smallest seas in the world. It forms the natural eastern frontier of Bulgaria and the only seaway of the country. The climate on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast is pleasant and mild with average summer temperatures between 26-28 degrees Celsius and over 2400 hours of sunshine annually. The salt content of the sea water is very low. There are no dangerous fish in its waters. Tides are not high. The sea bottom has a very low gradient, so that one can wade for hundreds of meters into the sea and the water hardly reaching his knees. The fine sand of the vast beaches, the combination of sea and mountains, the vineyards and orchards stretching to the very sea edge, the luxurious seaside resorts make the Bulgarian Black Sea coast and extremely attractive place for holiday making. |
